THE COLOUR

THE TINTING PIGMENT

The red algae Lithothamnion calcareum contain a powerful pigment in their plastids.

It was during the Bronze Age that the peoples of the sea learned to master its coloring power. The discovery of amphoras and earthenware dishes contained in the famous wreck of Uluburum in Turkey, testifies to its use in decoration. On the island of Okinawa, centenarians erect seaweed into medicine food for their richness in iodine and fiber.
