Focus on the ingredients

The ingredients as well as the manufacturing processes are taken into account. NATRUE classifies ingredients into three groups according to the processes to which they have been subjected:
– Natural ingredients;
– Processed ingredients of natural origin;
– Nature-identical ingredients.

Natural ingredients are unmodified and can only be obtained by physical processes or by fermentation. Naturally derived ingredients are the result of chemical reaction processes permitted on only natural ingredients. Nature-identical ingredients can be pigments, minerals or preservatives. They are reproduced in the laboratory but exist in nature. These ingredients are only permitted when strictly necessary for consumer safety (preservatives) or for reasons of purity (minerals/pigments). All these ingredients have one essential characteristic: they all exist in nature. Nothing artificial (man-made) is allowed!

NATRUE defines different requirements depending on the product categories.

3 certification levels:

Natural cosmetics
This level constitutes the basis of the NATRUE Label: it defines which ingredients are authorized and how they can be processed. Products from the other two levels must meet the criteria of this first level. Depending on the type of product, a minimum threshold of natural ingredients and a maximum threshold of transformed substances of natural origin must be respected. Many products certified at this level contain organic ingredients, which is not a requirement but a choice of the company.

Partly organic natural cosmetics
All the above conditions apply but at least 70% of the natural ingredients* must come from controlled organic production and/or controlled wild harvesting. Compared to the first level, we require a higher minimum content of ingredients and a lower maximum content of processed ingredients of natural origin.

Organic cosmetics
The two aforementioned conditions apply with at least 95% natural ingredients* from controlled organic cultivation and/or controlled wild harvesting. Compared to the second level, we require an even higher minimum content of natural ingredients and an even lower maximum content of processed ingredients of natural origin. *or even processed ingredients of natural origin, if applicable
